Professor Ian Kinloch
Together with Dr. Bissett and Prof. Young, Prof. Kinloch leads the Advanced Nanostructures Group within the School of Materials and the National Graphene Institute and holds an EPSRC Challenging Engineering Fellowship and EPSRC/RAEng Research Fellowship.
He moved to Manchester in 2006, having previously worked as a PDRA and studied for a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Cambridge and getting a BSc(Hons) in Physics at the University of Durham.
He is currently Director of Materials for the School of Materials, Deputy Theme Leader for the 2D Theme in the Henry Royce Institute and Deputy Work-package Leader of the Composites Theme in the Graphene Flagship.
Graphene is one of the strongest and stiffest known materials and is also very light weight. These properties mean that graphene can be mixed with plastics such as epoxy to make composites which have good specific physical properties (ie strength per unit mass).
